Cape L'Agulhas

African Classic Encounters - the leading tour specialists for Africa - www.classicencounters.com

Depart from Cape Town for an exhilarating and spectacular ride around False Bay via Gordens Bay and Betty’s Bay, and on to the historic coastal resort of Hermanus for lunch. Continue past rolling wheat fields on to Cape L’Agulhas, to visit the southern most point of Africa.

The southern most point of Africa is at the end of Cape Agulhas, just south of the village of L'Agulhas and its lighthouse. There's a lot more to this cape than the end of it: a lot of nice scenery and some remote towns (cute, and worth the drive down dirt roads to get there). If you stretch the definition of "cape" to include the land quite a ways north toward the N2 highway.

The town of Elim was founded in the 19th century by Christians from Moravia and Bohemia. It's still a religious community; the church plays a big part in the lives of  people from the town and of the farmers around it, as it did two centuries ago. It's also a tidy community of thatch-roofed homes and buildings, a friendly and interesting place for a stroll.

The church with its original clock, and its bells, still keep time for the village. The architecture is Dutch inspired.

Spend the day traveling the 7 Passes Route, which climbs up to 4000 meters (13,123 feet) and the local ski club.

Nestled at the foothill of the Eastern Cape's highest mountain, McDhui, Tiffendell looks out across a mountainous valley that is simply breathtaking. During the snow season there’s nothing quite like taking a seat in the resort bar and gazing out across the valley as you sip those snowboarding aches away.

Indeed, there's nothing to stop you doing the same in summer.
